Behind Her Eyes

Chapter 06: Confronting the Shadow

Elaine’s breath hitched in her chest as she stared at the figure in the corner of the dark room. The man in the blue jacket. His presence filled the space, suffocating the air with an overwhelming sense of dread. She could feel him watching her, even though he didn’t move.

Her hands trembled by her sides, and despite knowing she was in the safety of Amir’s office, the room felt too real. Too cold.

Amir’s voice came from a distance, soft yet persistent. “Elaine, you’re in control. You have the power to confront him. I want you to take a step forward, just one step.”

Elaine couldn’t move. She couldn’t even breathe. The man’s gaze felt like it was burning into her, like he could see into her very soul.

This is a dream. It has to be. She repeated the thought to herself, trying to ground herself in rationality. But every time she tried to convince herself, the room around her felt more solid, more tangible.

With a trembling breath, Elaine stepped forward. Her heart hammered in her chest, and each step toward the man in the blue jacket felt like an eternity. The closer she got, the more his features sharpened. The faint smirk that had once been a shadow of an expression now defined itself more clearly. He wasn’t smiling, but he wasn’t frowning either—just standing there, waiting.

Why doesn’t he speak? Elaine thought, her mind spinning with confusion and fear. The silence between them was unbearable.

Finally, she stopped a few feet away from him. She could feel her pulse in her ears, and the silence felt like it was going to suffocate her.

“Who are you?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The man in the blue jacket didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he looked her up and down, his expression unreadable. Then, he tilted his head slightly, as though considering her question carefully.

“You know who I am,” he said at last, his voice low and calm.

Elaine’s heart skipped a beat. No. No, this can’t be real.

“I don’t know you,” she replied, her voice shaky but determined. “I don’t know why you’re haunting me.”

The man’s lips curled into the faintest of smirks. “Haunting?” he repeated softly. “Is that what you think I’m doing? No, Elaine. I’m not haunting you. I’m showing you what’s already inside of you.”

Elaine’s knees nearly buckled. She didn’t want to hear this, didn’t want to understand. What did he mean? What was inside of her?

“You’re not real,” she muttered, stepping back, her mind spinning. “This is just a dream. A hallucination. None of this is real.”

The man’s eyes darkened. “I’m as real as you make me, Elaine. And you’ve made me very real indeed.”

She wanted to run, but her feet felt glued to the floor. There was something about his words, about his presence, that kept her rooted in place. She felt like she was drowning in the weight of his stare, as if his eyes could peel back the layers of her soul and expose her deepest fears.

What is he? Why is this happening to me?

The man in the blue jacket took a step toward her. “You are me, Elaine,” he said softly. “I am your reflection, the part of you you refuse to see. The truths you bury deep inside your mind. The parts of yourself you fear to acknowledge.”

Elaine felt the ground shift beneath her feet. She staggered backward, shaking her head. “No. That’s not true. You’re not me. You can’t be.”

He stepped forward again, his presence growing more oppressive with each movement. “How long do you think you can hide from yourself? From the things you’ve repressed? You think your patients are the only ones who carry the weight of their pasts? You think you’re immune to it?”

Elaine’s breath caught in her throat. The question hit her harder than any blow could. Her past, her memories—she had spent years pushing them away, locking them in a deep part of herself that she never wanted to revisit.

“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she whispered, feeling a cold sweat forming on the back of her neck.

“Oh, but you do,” he said, his voice like silk, each word cutting through her defenses. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. You’ve buried it all under layers of denial, convinced yourself it doesn’t matter. But I’m here to remind you that it does.”

Elaine’s mind raced as flashes of memories began to surface—fragments of her childhood, moments she had buried so deep that they felt foreign to her now. A small room. Her mother’s face, angry and distant. The sound of shouting.

“No,” Elaine gasped, clenching her fists. “No, this isn’t true. It’s not real. It can’t be.”

The man in the blue jacket didn’t flinch. “You want to ignore the past, but the past will never ignore you. It’s with you, Elaine. It’s part of you. And as long as you refuse to face it, it will continue to haunt you. The same way it’s haunting your patients. The same way it’s haunting me.”

Elaine’s vision blurred, the room spinning as she fought to hold onto her composure. But the more she resisted, the stronger the memories became. The more the man’s words gnawed at her, forcing her to confront the truth she had worked so hard to bury.

“Why are you doing this?” she cried, her voice breaking. “What do you want from me?”

He didn’t answer immediately. He simply stood there, his eyes piercing through her, as if waiting for her to come to the truth on her own.

“I want you to see yourself,” he said at last. “The truth you’ve been running from. The truth about your past, your fears, and your guilt. The sooner you face it, the sooner you can escape me.”

Elaine stood frozen, the weight of his words crashing over her like a tidal wave.

See yourself?

Her mind flashed to her childhood, to the moments she had tried so hard to forget. She saw her mother’s face again, angry and unforgiving. She saw herself, a young girl, standing in that small, dimly lit room, crying for help that never came.

The guilt. The shame. The fear.

It was all there, buried under years of training, therapy, and self-deception. But it was still there, waiting to be unearthed.

Elaine finally spoke, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m sorry.”

The man in the blue jacket nodded, his expression softening for the first time. “It’s not enough to be sorry, Elaine. You have to heal. You have to face it, or you’ll never escape me. You’ll never escape the echoes of your mind.”

Suddenly, the room seemed to shake. The walls warped and twisted, the darkness pressing in on all sides. Elaine felt herself falling—falling into the past, into the very depths of her own subconscious.

But just as she felt herself being consumed by the darkness, a light broke through.

Amir’s voice cut through the chaos. “Elaine, wake up! Come back to me.”

Elaine’s eyes snapped open. She gasped for air, her heart racing. She was back in Amir’s office, lying on the couch. His hands were on her shoulders, shaking her gently, his face etched with concern.

“Elaine,” he said softly, his voice filled with urgency. “Are you okay? You were… you were lost there for a moment.”

Elaine’s mind was spinning, the images from the dream still fresh in her mind. But she could feel the man in the blue jacket slipping away, fading into the shadows.

She nodded slowly, struggling to steady her breath. “I’m okay… I think.”

Amir’s gaze was still worried, but he nodded. “We need to keep going, Elaine. You’ve touched something deep inside. But this is just the beginning. There’s still more to uncover.”

Elaine closed her eyes, bracing herself for what was to come. She didn’t know if she was ready to face it. But one thing was certain: the man in the blue jacket wasn’t going to let her go. Not until she saw the truth.
